Gowanus – A just rezoning

The Gowanus Canal is New York City’s first designated superfund site and has an inherent history of pollution and neglect. Remediation is finally underway and the neighborhood is home to the largest scale rezoning in New York City in decades.

350BK is an active member of the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice, working to ensure environmental justice during the rezoning and for the future of the neighborhood. We are working with allied organizations and individuals to forge the nation’s first Environmental Justice Special District, setting precedent for the future of this city and other cities across the nation.

350BK plays an important role in GNCJ - in addition to being invited to attend monthly member meetings, 350BK members often communicate with elected officials, submit comments and testimony, reach out to gather support of the coalition’s demands, and speak at community meetings about the work of the coalition. 350BK is also proud to  help shape what the Environmental Justice Special District is and how it functions.

To preserve the clean up of the canal and ensure environmental justice, the coalition has devised a list of demands of the city in relation to the rezoning of Gowanus neighborhood. You can read about them and sign the petition to support them here.

Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice meetings occur on the second Thursday of each month from 4-6pm.
