Reducing Single-Use Plastics in Makeup and Clothing

It’s the final week of Plastic Free July and we’re focusing on cutting single-use plastics in makeup and clothing. Many beauty and fashion products are packaged in plastic or contain it, leading to microplastic pollution. Here are some tips to minimize your environmental impact:

  • Choose Plastic-Free Packaging: Opt for makeup brands with refillable or plastic-free options. Consider solid makeup products like blush, foundation, and eyeshadow.
  • Shop Secondhand: Buy clothes from thrift stores instead of new.
  • Opt for Sustainable Fabrics: Select clothing made from natural, sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, or linen instead of synthetic materials like polyester.
    • Tip: Wearing an eco t-shirt under your sweater reduces washing, saving water and prolonging garment life.
  • Make Your Own Beauty Products: Use natural ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils to create custom products and reduce plastic waste.
    • Hot Tip: Apply avocado oil and shea butter for moisturizing with SPF protection.
  • Support Sustainable Brands: Choose brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical production practices.
    • Hot Tip: African Black Soap from Ghana is great for bathing and as a shampoo.
  • Donate or Upcycle Clothing: Donate old clothes or upcycle them into new items.
    • Hot Tip: Thred Up is a great place to buy and sell upcycled clothing.
  • Eco-Friendly Fashion: ANYBAG creates durable tote bags from NYC plastic bags, diverting over half a million plastic bags from landfills and waterways.

Call to Action:

  • Support Legislation: The Fashion Sustainability and Accountability Act aims to hold the fashion industry accountable for environmental claims. Check if your senator supports the bill and contact them to express your support.
  • Shop Vintage: Visit your local vintage or used clothing store with a friend or family member, find unique pieces, and donate items you no longer need.
  • Host a Clothing Swap: Organize a swap with friends to refresh your wardrobe without buying new items.

Thank you for joining us in Plastic Free July!
