350Brooklyn strives to counter the climate crisis through local action. We work toward a world that is just, equitable, and sustainable and where all beings can thrive.

What We Are

350Brooklyn is a volunteer-driven group that mobilizes people to take effective local action to address the climate crisis. We are committed to pursuing solutions that both reduce climate pollution and ensure that low-income New Yorkers and environmental justice communities participate fully in the benefits the shift to renewable energy will bring.

We have a strong track record of accomplishments, often working in coalition with other climate groups in New York City and New York State.  We work to make opportunities to do useful work available to everyone.  With a mailing list of over 4,000 people, several hundred people a year plan campaigns, research issues, visit legislators, testify before public agencies, make art, call elected officials, post on social media, put on educational programs, lead groups in conversation, interview activists, participate in rallies and marches–all the many varied actions that make up the climate movement.  We also have a families group where parents and younger children can take actions together that are age-appropriate.  350Brooklyn is a place where people who are concerned about the climate crisis can channel their concerns into real action.

While we are affiliated with a network of 350s around the globe, we are an independent entity.  We make our own decisions about campaigns we undertake, and rely on donors to support our work.

Structure and Governance

Since our inception in 2015  we have been a volunteer-driven group with a flat, democratic structure.

350BK has a Steering Committee that meets monthly. Members of the Steering Committee are either leaders of current campaigns or working groups, or bring special expertise to the group. The Steering Committee makes all decisions democratically by building consensus.

In our workgroup and committee work, we adhere to principles in which each person has a voice and all work is respected.  In our organizational structure and decision-making we strive to balance the cohesion that promotes effectiveness with a flat structure that promotes egalitarian participation.

Our Workgroups

Some of our workgroups focus on campaigns such as passing meaningful legislation in New York City and New York State, or blocking local fossil fuel infrastructure projects.  Others offer programs to help people understand the climate crisis and solutions to it.  Still others, like the Media Team, support all our campaigns.  We organize campaigns based on what we perceive as the best opportunities to end the use of fossil fuels and promote a just transition to a sustainable future.
